The Concept to Clinic: Commercializing Innovation (C3i) program celebrates its 10-year milestone, having evolved since its 2014 inception to include 250 teams and 650 individuals. Developed by the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation and managed by Lab2Market, the program aims to guide medical device innovators in navigating the transition from lab to market. Todd Merchak, director of NIBIB’s Office of Program Evaluation and Strategic Partnerships, highlights its value in preparing innovators for entrepreneurship in healthcare. Notable participants include Peter Kim, whose surgical vision device received FDA clearance after completing C3i, Shiva Abbaszadeh, who plans to license her x-ray detector technology to an OEM, and Ali Bisaccia, a DEBUT Challenge winner now developing orthopedic devices through Xander Medical with insights gained from C3i. The program’s growth includes additional courses and increased institute participation, underscoring its impact in fostering biomedical innovation.
